State Funeral Honours Former GG Jeffery
Former governor-general Michael Jeffery has been remembered as a warrior king, a loving grandfather and a great Australian.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison led mourners on Tuesday at the state funeral for Major General Jeffery, who died on December 18, aged 83.
Among the congregation at the ANZAC Memorial Chapel of St Paul at Duntroon in Canberra was Governor-General David Hurley.
Former prime ministers John Howard and Julia Gillard were unable to attend because of coronavirus travel restrictions.
Major General Jeffery's funeral is being held at the place where his long career of public service started.
Australia's 24th governor-general left Western Australia at the age of 16 to join the army at the Royal Military College, Duntroon.
Brigadier Chris Roberts gave a eulogy, as did Zoe van der Klooseter, one of the major general's seven grandchildren, and son Craig Jeffery, one of his four children.
"There was a great sense that we have lost a great warrior king," Brigadier Roberts said.
Ms van der Klooseter and Mr Jeffery spoke of the major general's family life, with his granddaughter paying an emotional tribute to her "papa".
Mr Jeffery affectionately said his father was not perfect, noting the whole street could hear him singing Italian love songs in the shower, without actually knowing the words.
Anglican priest and author Tom Frame, who knew Major General Jeffery for 32 years, conducted the service and praised him as "an upright man".
Major General Jeffery's 35-year military career included a tour thác bản giốc of duty in Vietnam, during which he was awarded the Military Cross.
After retiring from the army in 1993, he served as WA governor until 2000 and kynghidongduong.vn was Australia's governor-general from 2003-08.
After his public service, he became Australia's first soil health advocate.
